How to Use

  • pregnancy-oil

    Understand your anatomy

The perineum is the area located between the vagina and the anus. There is evidence to suggest that massaging this area can reduce your risk of tearing during childbirth, supporting your body’s natural ability to stretch.

Choose the right product for you

Perineal massage oil assists with your massage, helping you to soften, nourish and moisturise the delicate perineal area. Generation Mama Perineal Massage Oil has been lovingly blended to include a unique mix of natural ingredients to add a range of benefits to your massage. Check out the ‘Ingredients’ tab to find out more.

    Clean hands and genitals thoroughly

Ensure your hands, fingernails and genitals are clean before you start your massage.

Find the right position to do perineal massage

It’s important that you’re comfortable and relaxed during your perineal massage and able to reach the perineal area with ease. The image shows a popular position - sitting with your knees bent and legs apart.

    Apply perineal massage oil

Empty a generous amount of perineal massage oil onto your fingers and coat the perineal area thoroughly.

Use a circling motion at first

Then imagine a half circle on your perineal area as pictured, massage your perineum in a circling motion. Repeat this for 1-2 minutes.

  • first-time-mum

Then stretch your perineum and use a rocking motion massage

Insert your thumb into your vagina and stretch the skin downwards towards the perineum, resting your fingers on your perineum. Hold this stretch for around 1 minute.

Now use a rocking motion to rub the skin of your perineum.

Repeat weekly from around week 34

Evidence suggests that when perineal massage is done from week 34, it can reduce the risk of tearing and episiotomy during childbirth. We recommend perineal massage 3-4 times per week for the best results.

FAQs

Yes definitely, in fact this is a really popular way to do perineal massage.

There is increasing research supporting the efficacy of perineal massage. Recent research suggests that regular perineal massage in the last weeks of pregnancy may contribute to increased perineal flexibility, potentially reducing the likelihood of tears or the need for episiotomies during delivery. Some studies have shown a correlation between perineal massage and a decreased incidence of perineal trauma, particularly among first-time mothers.

We’re not going to say you can’t use olive oil for perineal massage - you definitely can - but it isn’t specifically formulated for that purpose like Generation Mama Perineal Massage Oil.

What does that mean? Well, each of the ingredients included in the formulation have been carefully selected for their specific properties which support the success of your perineal massage. For example sweet almond oil is known to be intensely moisturising supporting the skin’s ability to stretch, grape seed oil for its natural skin protecting capabilities and antioxidants and avocado oil for it’s hydrating and nourishing properties.

Not only that, Generation Mama Perineal Massage Oil has a pleasant, calming scent and the texture is ideal for this type of massage. It’s also generally more user-friendly than olive oil as the applicator ensures you can extract just the right amount for your massage.

All research on perineal massage is in the latter stages of pregnancy, after 34 weeks. This is the reason why this timeframe is stated on the product. As the product is entirely natural starting before this point would not be harmful, it’s just that there are no documented benefits of perineal massage before this point.

Check out our instructions above on how to do perineal massage.

The perineum area is external and this is the area that this product is designed for. It is not needed internally as the vagina has natural lubrication. If you’re unsure where to find the perineum, check out the ‘how to use’ instructions above.
